[The First Aspect]

2349 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth reported to us, al-Layth narrated to me, Mu'awiyah b. Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali b. Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: "And give them compensation; the wealthy according to his means and the poor according to his means," it refers to a man who marries a woman and does not name a dowry for her, then he divorces her before he has sexual intercourse with her. So Allah, glory be to Him, commanded him to give her a gift of consolation according to the measure of his hardship or ease; if he is wealthy, he compensates her with a servant or the like, and if he is in hardship, he compensates her with three garments or the like.
