His saying (Exalted is He): "If you fear [an enemy]"

I read to Muhammad b. al-Fadl, Muhammad b. 'Ali reported to us, Muhammad b. Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr b. Ma'ruf, from Muqatil b. Hayyan, regarding His saying: "If you fear," he said: If you fear the enemy.

His saying: "On foot or riding"

[The First Aspect]

2382 - Ahmad b. 'Amr b. Abi 'Asim al-Nabil narrated to us, my father 'Amr b. al-Dahhak b. Makhlad narrated to me, my father al-Dahhak b. Makhlad Abu 'Asim reported to us, Shabib b. Bishr informed us, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding: "If you fear, then [pray] on foot or riding," he said: The rider prays on his mount, and the pedestrian on his feet.

Abu Muhammad said: It was narrated from al-Hasan, Mujahid, Makhul, al-Hakam, al-Suddi, Malik, al-Awza'i, al-Thawri, and Husayn b. Salih the like of this, and they added: He gestures with his head in whichever direction he faces.

[The Second Aspect]: That it is one rak'ah.

2383 - Kathir b. Shihab al-Madhhiji al-Qazwini narrated to us, Muhammad b. Sa'id b. Sabiq reported to us, 'Amr b. Abi Qays reported to us, from Mutarrif, from 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi regarding: "If you fear, then [pray] on foot or riding," he said: That is during the standoff when they are lined up against the enemy; one rak'ah and two prostrations, he gestures with his head as a gesture.

2384 - My father narrated to me, Abu Ghassan reported to us, Dhu'ad b. 'Ulbah reported to us, from Mutarrif, from 'Atiyyah, from Jabir b. 'Abd Allah, he said: When the fighting (musayafah) occurs, let him gesture with his head toward wherever he is facing, and that is the meaning of His saying: "On foot or riding." It was narrated from al-Hasan, Mujahid, Sa'id b. Jubayr, 'Ata', 'Atiyyah, al-Hakam, Hammad, and Qatadah the like of that.

[The Third Aspect]: That it is two rak'ahs.

2385 - Abu al-Azhar informed us in what he wrote to me, Wahb b. Jarir reported to us, my father reported to us, from 'Ali b. al-Hakam, from al-Dahhak, as for His saying: "On foot or riding," He permitted them to pray while they are fighting, two rak'ahs in whichever direction one faces, gesturing with his head if he is unable to bow and prostrate.

It was narrated from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, al-Zuhri, Makhul, al-Rabi' b. Anas, Sufyan al-Thawri, and Hasan b. Salih that they said: Two rak'ahs.
