[Continuation of Surah Al 'Imran]
[His saying, the Exalted: "Never will you attain the righteousness (al-birr)"]
[The First Aspect]
3808 - Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid informed us by way of reading, Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb informed me, Shayban informed me, Ishaq al-Sabi'i narrated to me, from his father, from Abu 'Ubaydah, from his father 'Abdullah regarding "Never will you attain the righteousness (al-birr)," he said: "Al-birr is Paradise."
3809 - My father narrated to us, Duhaym narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, from Shayban, from 'Asim, from Zirr, from 'Abdullah, and he mentioned the like of it. Abu Muhammad said: It was also narrated from 'Amr ibn Maymun and al-Suddi similar to that.
[The Second Aspect]
3810 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim reported to us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, concerning His saying: "Never will you attain the righteousness (al-birr)," [it means] piety (al-taqwa).
[The Third Aspect]
3811 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: regarding His saying: "Al-birr," he said: "That which is firmly established in the hearts of obedience to Allah."
His saying, the Exalted: "Until you spend from that which you love"
3812 - Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la informed us by way of reading, Wahb reported to us that Malik informed him, from Ishaq ibn 'Abdullah ibn Abi Talhah, that he heard Anas ibn Malik saying: Abu Talhah was the wealthiest among the Ansar in Medina in terms of palm trees. His most beloved property to him was Bayruha', and it was opposite the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to enter it and drink from some sweet water in it.
Anas said: When this verse was revealed: "Never will you attain the righteousness (al-birr) until you spend from that which you love," Abu Talhah stood up to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah says in His Book: 'Never will you attain the righteousness (al-birr) until you spend from that which you love,' and my most beloved property to me is Bayruha'. It is a charity for Allah, and I hope for its righteousness and its storage with Allah. So, O Messenger of Allah, dispose of it wherever you wish." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Excellent! That is a profitable property. I have heard what you said regarding it, and I am of the opinion that you should designate it for your relatives." Abu Talhah said: "I will do so, O Messenger of Allah." So Abu Talhah distributed it among his relatives and his paternal cousins.
(1) In the original manuscript, it is "rabih" (profitable), and in Sahih Muslim it is "rabih" (profitable). See the Book of Zakat, no. 988.
