Translation · EN

‘Abbad ibn Mansur, from al-Hasan, regarding His saying: "They were, that day, nearer to disbelief than to faith." He said: They were the hypocrites; so they became cowardly, and he said what you have heard them say: "They were, that day, nearer to disbelief than to faith."

His saying, the Exalted: "Saying with their mouths what is not in their hearts."

4479 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq said regarding His saying: "Saying with their mouths what is not in their hearts." He said: He revealed of them what they were concealing within themselves.

His saying, the Exalted: "And Allah is most knowing of what they conceal."

4480 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: "And Allah is most knowing of what they conceal," meaning: what they hide.

His saying, the Exalted: "Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home]."

4481 - al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Musa ibn Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, ‘Abbad ibn Mansur narrated to us, from al-Hasan regarding His saying: "Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home]." He said: They are the disbelievers.

4482 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Amr narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: "Those who said about their brothers": Those who were struck down alongside you from their kin and their people.

4483 - ‘Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed us in what he wrote to me, Zayd ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj regarding His saying: "Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home]": The statement of the hypocrite ‘Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul and their brethren who went out with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on the day of Uhud.

His saying, the Exalted: "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed."

4484 - Yunus ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la informed us by recitation, Ibn Wahb reported, Nafi‘ ibn Zayd informed us, from ‘Aqil, from Ibn Shihab, who said: Indeed, Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed regarding His Prophet concerning the Qadariyyah, "Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home]: If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed."

4485 - al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Musa ibn Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, ‘Abbad ibn Mansur narrated to us, he said: I asked al-Hasan about His saying: "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." He said: They are the disbelievers, saying to their brothers: Had they been with us, they would not have been killed. They imagine that their attendance at the battle is what hastens them to their appointed time (ajal).
