ibn ‘Adi al-Khiyar, who informed him, saying: I entered upon ‘Uthman, then I testified (pronounced the Shahadah), and then I said: "Verily, Allah sent Muhammad with the truth, and revealed to him the Book, and I was among those who responded to Allah and His Messenger."
- Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Qazzaz narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, al-Mas‘udi narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn ‘Ali al-Sa’ib, from Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i, who said: ‘Abd Allah said: "This verse was revealed concerning eighteen of us: 'Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after injury had afflicted them.'"
- Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqri’ narrated to us, Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from ‘Ikrimah, who said: When the polytheists returned from Uhud, they said: "You have not killed Muhammad, nor have you taken the maidens (al-kawa‘ib) as captives. How evil is that which you have done! Return!" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) heard of this, so he called upon the Muslims, and they responded until he reached Hamra’ al-Asad—or the well of Abu ‘Utbah; Sufyan was in doubt—then the polytheists said: "We will return next year." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) returned, and this was counted as a battle (ghazwah), and Allah the Exalted revealed: "Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after injury had afflicted them. For those who did good among them and feared Allah is a great reward."
- Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani narrated to us, Hafs ibn ‘Umar narrated to us, al-Hakam—meaning Ibn Aban—narrated to us, ‘Ikrimah said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out to Badr al-Sughra (the Lesser Badr), and they were still suffering from their wounds. They went out for the appointment with Abu Sufyan. A Bedouin passed by them, then passed by Abu Sufyan and his companions, and he was saying: "My she-camel took fright of Muhammad and my companions, and dried dates (ajwah) scattered like red beads (al-‘anjad)." Abu Sufyan met him and said: "Woe to you! What are you saying?" He replied: "Muhammad and his companions; I left them at Badr al-Sughra." Abu Sufyan said: "They say and are truthful, and we say but are not believed." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had suffered some of the Bedouins, and they returned. ‘Ikrimah said: Regarding them, this verse was revealed: "Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after injury had afflicted them," up to His saying: "...they returned with a blessing from Allah and bounty."
- My father narrated to us, Musa ibn Isma‘il narrated to us, Mubarak narrated to us, from al-Hasan, regarding His saying: "Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after injury had afflicted them": That Abu Sufyan and his companions had inflicted upon the Muslims what they did, and they left, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Verily..."
