4517 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: "Those to whom the people said"—and the people who said to them what they said—are the group from ‘Abd Qays to whom Abu Sufyan said what he said: "Indeed, Abu Sufyan and those with him are returning to you."

His saying, the Exalted: "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them; but it increased them in faith."

4518 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Kathir al-‘Abdi narrated to us, Sulayman ibn Kathir informed us, from Husayn, from Abu Malik regarding His saying: "Those to whom the people said, 'Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them; but it increased them in faith,'" he said: Abu Sufyan had sent [a message] on the day of Uhud or the day of the Confederates (al-Ahzab) to Quraysh, Ghatafan, and Hawazin, seeking their aid against the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). This reached the Prophet of Allah and those with him, and it was said: "If a group of Muslims went out, they would bring you the news." He said: So a group went out until they reached the place where it was mentioned to them that they were, but they did not see anyone, so they returned.

4519 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salamah narrated to us, Mubarak narrated to us, al-Hasan narrated to us, regarding His saying: "Indeed, the people have gathered against you," he said: Abu Sufyan and his companions have gathered against you.

His saying, the Exalted: "But it increased them in faith."

4520 - My father narrated to us, ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from someone who heard Mujahid saying regarding His saying: "But it increased them in faith," he said: Faith increases and decreases.

His saying, the Exalted: "And they said, 'Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.'"

4521 - Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, Qays narrated to us, from Abu Husayn, from Abu al-Duha, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: When Ibrahim was thrown into the fire, and he was taken to be thrown into the fire, he said: "Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs." He said: Muhammad also said the like of it: "Those to whom the people said, 'Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them; but it increased them in faith, and they said: Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.'"

4522 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi ‘Umar narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Amr, from ‘Ikrimah, who said: Badr was a place of commerce in the Pre-Islamic Era (Jahiliyyah). When the day of Uhud came, Abu Sufyan said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Your appointment is Badr in the coming year." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "It is your appointment." When the Prophet (peace be upon him) went out for the appointment of Abu Sufyan, a man met them and said: "Indeed, there are forces there."
