His saying, the Exalted: "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House—for whoever is able to find thereto a way."
3857 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Mansur ibn Wardan, the Imam of the Masjid al-Ansar, narrated to us, 'Ali ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from his father, from Abu al-Bakhtari, from 'Ali: When [the verse] "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House—for whoever is able to find thereto a way" was revealed, the believers said: "O Messenger of Allah, is it every year, twice?" He replied: "No. Had I said 'yes,' it would have become obligatory." So Allah, the Exalted, revealed: "O you who have believed, do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you."
His saying, the Exalted: "For whoever is able to find thereto a way."
3858 - Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Musa ibn Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn Mansur narrated to us, who said: I asked al-Hasan about His saying: "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House—for whoever is able to find thereto a way." He said: "Whoever finds something that will convey him [to it], he has indeed found a way to it."
[His saying, the Exalted: "Thereto a way"]

Those who interpreted it as provisions and a mount:

3860 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah al-'Amiri narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Umayr al-Laythi narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn 'Abbad ibn Ja'far, who said: We sat with 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar, and he said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and asked him: "What is the 'way' (al-sabil)?" He replied: "Provisions and a mount." Abu Muhammad said: The like of this has been narrated from Ibn 'Abbas, Anas, al-Hasan, Mujahid, 'Ata', Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Rabi' ibn Anas, and Qatadah.
