[The Second Aspect]

Those who interpreted 'the way' (al-sabil) as the health of the body; this is the second aspect:

3861 - Yahya ibn 'Abdaka al-Qazwini narrated to us, al-Muqri' narrated to us, Haywah and Ibn Lahi'ah both narrated to us, saying: Sharhabil ibn Sharik narrated to us that he heard 'Ikrimah say regarding this verse: "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House—for whoever is able to find thereto a way": He said: "The 'way' is health."

3862 - 'Abd al-Malik ibn Abi 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman—meaning the son of al-Hakam ibn Bashir ibn Mihran—narrated to us, from Sufyan, from 'Uthman ibn al-Mughirah al-Thaqafi, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr who said: "For whoever is able to find thereto a way," [he may perform it] even if he walks to it for four months. Sufyan said: "This is among the sha'dh (irregular) hadiths."

3863 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, 'A'idh ibn Habib narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak, who said: "If he is poor, but he is healthy and young, he should hire himself out for food and the journey until he performs the pilgrimage."

[The Third Aspect]

3864 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Khathyam al-Hilali narrated to us, my brother Ma'mar ibn Khathyam informed me, saying: I asked Abu Ja'far about the saying of Allah the Exalted: "For whoever is able to find thereto a way." He said: "O Ma'mar, it is that you have a mount, or that you walk one segment of the journey and ride for one segment."

3865 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Nufayl al-Harrani narrated to us, al-Nadr ibn 'Arabi narrated to us, from Maymun ibn Mihran, regarding "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House—for whoever is able to find thereto a way": [This applies to one] walking and riding.

[The Fourth Aspect]

3866 - Abu 'Amr al-Awdi narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Layth, from Abu Hubayrah, that a woman wrote to Ibrahim from al-Rayy asking him about a woman performing the pilgrimage without a mahram (unmarriageable kin). He wrote back to her: "The mahram is part of the 'way' (al-sabil)."

[The First Aspect]

3867 - Muhammad ibn Abi Dawud al-Simnani narrated to us, Abu Hudhayfah narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibrahim—meaning al-Khuzi—from Muhammad ibn 'Abbad, from Ibn 'Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "...and whoever disbelieves in Allah and the Last Day."

مَنْ فَسَّرَهُ أَنَّ السَّبِيلَ: صِحَّةُ الْبَدَنِ وَهُوَ الْوَجْهُ الثَّانِي:

٣٨٦١ - حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِكَ الْقَزْوِينِيُّ، ثنا الْمُقْرِئُ، ثنا حَيْوَةُ وَابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ قَالا:

ثنا شُرَحْبِيلُ بْنُ شَرِيكٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عِكْرِمَةَ يَقُولُ فِي هَذِهِ الآيَةِ وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلا قَالَ: السَّبِيلُ: الصِّحَّة.

٣٨٦٢ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ يَعْنِي: ابْنَ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ بَشِيرِ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ الثَّقَفِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ: مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلا وَإِنْ مَشَى إِلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُر. قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: هَذَا الشَّاذُّ مِنَ الْحَدِيثِ.

٣٨٦٣ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، ثنا عَائِذُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ جُوَيْبِرٍ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ قَالَ: إِنْ كَانَ فَقِيراً وَهُوَ صَحِيحٌ شَابٌّ فَلْيُؤَاجِرْ نَفْسَهُ بِالأَكْلَةِ وَالْعَقَبَةِ حَتَّى يَحُجّ.

وَالْوَجْهُ الثَّالِثُ:

٣٨٦٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ خَثْيَمٍ الْهِلَالِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَخِي مَعْمَرُ بْنُ خَثْيَمٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلا قَالَ:

يَا مَعْمَرُ أَنْ تَكُونَ لَكَ رَاحِلَةٌ أَوْ يَمْشِي عُقْبَةً وَيَرْكَبُ عُقْبَةً.

٣٨٦٥ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا ابْنُ نُفَيْلٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ثنا النَّضْرُ بْنُ عَرَبِيٍّ، عَنْ مَيْمُونِ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلا مَاشِياً وَرَاكِباً.

وَالْوَجْهُ الرَّابِعُ:

٣٨٦٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو الأَوْدِيُّ، ثنا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُبَيْرَةَ أَنَّ امْرَأَةً كَتَبَتْ إِلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ مِنَ الرَّيِّ تَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْمَرْأَةِ تَحُجُّ مَعَ غَيْرِ ذِي مَحْرَمٍ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهَا: إِنَّ الْمَحْرَمَ مِنَ السَّبِيلِ.

قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَمَنْ كَفَرَ

٣٨٦٧ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي دَاوُدَ السِّمْنَانِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو حُذَيْفَةَ ثنا سُفْيَانُ «١» عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ يَعْنِي الْخُوزِيَّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبَّادٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: وَمَنْ كَفَر بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ.
