[The first interpretation]

4575 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘d al-‘Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And let not those who withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty think it is better for them; rather, it is worse for them," he means by that the People of the Scripture, that they withheld the Scripture and did not clarify it to the people.

He said: They are a disbeliever and a hypocrite who withholds from spending in the cause of Allah.
