Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 3 · Page 133Surah Al Imran (3): Verse 187

Translation · EN

4621 - ‘Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed us in what he wrote to me, Zayd ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj regarding "And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse," he said: It means the Jews and the Christians. The Muslims used to hear from the Jews their saying: ‘Uzayr is the son of Allah, and from the Christians their saying: The Messiah is the son of Allah. The Muslims would confront them with war, and they would hear their associating others with Allah.

4622 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi‘ah narrated to us, ‘Ata’ ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah: "...indeed, that is..."—he said: This patience in the face of harm, while commanding the good and forbidding the evil, is "of the matters [worthy of] determination," meaning: concerning those matters which Allah has commanded.

His saying, the Exalted: "And [recall, O People of the Scripture,] when Allah took the covenant of those who were given the Scripture."

[The First Aspect]

4623 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘d al-‘Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to us, my uncle narrated to us, my father narrated to me, from my grandfather, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding the saying: "And when Allah took the covenant of those who were given the Scripture," he said: He commanded them to follow the unlettered Prophet who believes in Allah and His words—he said: "And follow him so that you may be guided." Then, when Allah sent Muhammad, He said: "And fulfill My covenant, [that] I will fulfill your covenant," He made a covenant with them regarding that. So He said when He sent Muhammad: Believe in him, "and you will find with Me that which you love."

4624 - Muhammad ibn al-Wazir al-Wasiti narrated to us, Yahya ibn Sa‘id al-Qattan narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Habib, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, who said: I said to Ibn ‘Abbas: The companions of ‘Abd Allah recite: "And when Allah took the covenant of those who were given the Scripture." Ibn ‘Abbas said: Allah only took the covenant of the prophets—meaning: upon their people.

And the Second Aspect:

4625 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abu al-Jahhaf, from Muslim al-Batin, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr: "And when Allah took the covenant of those who were given the Scripture," he said: The Jews.
