His saying, the Exalted: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought"
[The First Aspect]
4639 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-'Awfi informed me in what he wrote to me, my father, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought and love to be praised for what they have not done": They are the People of the Scripture, the Scripture was sent down to them, but they judged with other than the truth, distorted the words from their places, and rejoiced in that. They rejoiced that they disbelieved in Muhammad and what was sent down to him, while they claimed that they worshipped Allah, fasted, prayed, and obeyed Allah. So the Exalted said to Muhammad: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought": they have disbelieved in Allah and disbelieved in Muhammad.
[The Second Aspect]
4640 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said, Muhammad, the mawla of the family of Zayd ibn Thabit, narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah, the mawla of Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought," meaning: Finhas, Ashya', and their likes among the rabbis, who rejoice in what they obtain of worldly gain by what they adorned for the people of misguidance.
[The Third Aspect]
4641 - Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani narrated to us, Hafs ibn 'Umar informed us, al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us, from 'Ikrimah regarding the saying of Allah: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought," he said: Ibn 'Abbas said: Their altering of the Torah, and the following of those who followed them in that.
4642 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu al-Juhhaf, from Muslim al-Batin, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought," he said: They are the Jews, [referring to] their concealment of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
4643 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, Sharik narrated to us, from Abu al-Juhhaf, from Muslim al-Batin, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "rejoice in what they have brought," he said: The People of the Scripture say: "We are upon the religion of Abraham," and they are not so.

4644 - Abu Sa'id ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us, Aflah ibn Sa'id narrated to me, he said: I heard Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi say: There were in the Children of Israel devout, learned men. The kings brought them in, gave them concessions, and gave them [wealth]. They came out rejoicing in what the kings had accepted of their words and what they were given. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought."
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أتوا

٤٦٣٩ - أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ الْعَوْفِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إلي، ثنا أبي عَمِّي الْحُسَيْنُ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَوْلَهُ: لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أَتَوْا وَيُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يُحْمَدُوا بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلُوا: فَهُمْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْكِتَابَ، فَحَكَمُوا بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَحَرَّفُوا الْكَلِمَ عَنْ مَوَاضِعِهِ وَفَرِحُوا بِذَلِكَ، فَرِحُوا بِأَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِمُحَمَّدٍ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْهِ وَهُمْ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّهُمْ يَعْبُدُونَ اللَّهَ وَيَصُومُونَ وَيُصَلُّونَ وَيُطِيعُونَ اللَّهَ، فَقَالَ تَعَالَى لِمُحَمَّدٍ لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أَتَوْا: كَفَرُوا بالله وكفروا بمحمد.

٤٦٤٠ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَنْبَأَ أَبُو غَسَّانَ، ثنا سَلَمَةُ قَالَ: قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدٌ مَوْلَى آلِ زَيْدٍ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلَهُ:
لَا تحسبن الذين يفرحون بما أتوا يَعْنِي: فَنْحَاصُ وَأَشْيَعُ وَأَشْبَاهُهُمَا مِنَ الأَحْبَارِ، الَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا يُصِيبُوا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَى مَا زَيَّنُوا لِلنَّاسِ مِنَ الضَّلالَةِ.
وَالْوَجْهُ الثَّالِثُ:
٤٦٤١ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ الطِّهْرَانِيُّ، أَنْبَأَ حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، ثنا الْحَكَمُ ابن أَبَانَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أَتَوْا قَالَ: قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: تَبْدِيلُهُمُ التَّوْرَاةَ، وَاتِّبَاعُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَهُمْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ.
٤٦٤٢ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، ثنا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي الجحاف، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ الْبَطِينِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ: لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أَتَوْا قَالَ: هُمُ الْيَهُودُ كِتْمَانُهُمْ مُحَمَّداً صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
٤٦٤٣ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، ثنا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي الجحاف، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ الْبَطِينِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أَتَوْا قَالَ: أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ يَقُولُونَ: نَحْنُ عَلَى دَيْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَلَيْسُوا كَذَلِكَ.

٤٦٤٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ، ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَفْلَحُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ كَعْبٍ الْقُرَظِيَّ قَالَ: كَانَ فِي بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ رِجَالٌ عُبَّادٌ فُقَهَاءُ، فَأَدْخَلَتْهُمُ الْمُلُوكُ، فَرَخَصُوا لَهُمْ وَأَعْطُوهُمْ، فَخَرَجُوا وَهُمْ فَرِحُونَ بِمَا أَخَذْتِ الْمُلُوكُ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ، وَمَا أُعْطُوا فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أَتَوْا.
