and they made it appear to him that they had informed him of what he had asked them about, and they sought to be praised for that by him, and they rejoiced in what they had brought of their concealment of what he had asked them about.
[The Third Aspect]
4648 - Muhammad ibn Sa'id al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my paternal uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And they love to be praised for what they have not done": [referring to] fasting and prayer.

[The Fifth Aspect]

[The Sixth Aspect]
4651 - al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Musa ibn Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn Mansur narrated to us, he said: I asked al-Hasan about His saying: "And they love to be praised for what they have not done," he said: He means the Jews of the people of Khaybar, who came to the Messenger of Allah and rejoiced in it. That is where Allah the Exalted said: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought and love to be praised for what they have not done." He claimed that they said to the people when they went out to them: "We have accepted the religion and are content," so they loved to be praised for what they had not done.
