His saying, the Exalted: "Their bridal gifts"

4767 - Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Ahmasi narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Sufyan, from 'Umayr al-Khath'ami, from 'Abd al-Malik ibn al-Mughirah al-Ta'ifi, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Baylamani, he said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said regarding [the verse]: "And give the women their bridal gifts as a free gift," they said: "O Messenger of Allah, what are the ties [al-'ala'iq] between them?" He said: "That upon which their families are satisfied."

4768 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding: "And give the women their bridal gifts," he says: Their dowries.

His saying, the Exalted: "As a free gift [nihlah]"

[The first perspective]

4769 - It was mentioned from Muhammad ibn Salamah, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah, from 'A'ishah, she said regarding: "And give the women their bridal gifts as a free gift," she said: Obligatory. Abu Muhammad said: It was narrated from Qatadah and Muqatil ibn Hayyan that they said: An ordinance.

4770 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And give the women their bridal gifts as a free gift": The dowry.

4771 - 'Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed us in what he wrote to me, Zayd ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, regarding: "And give the women their bridal gifts as a free gift," he said: A specified ordinance.

His saying, the Exalted: "Then if they are pleased for you"

4772 - Al-Husayn ibn al-Sakan al-Basri narrated to us, Abu Zayd al-Nahwi narrated to us, Qays narrated to us, from Salim al-Aftas, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding His saying: "Then if they are pleased for you with anything of it as a gift," he said: It is for the husbands.

4773 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "Then if they are pleased for you with anything," it is for the husbands.

4774 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, Yazid ibn Zuray', informed us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Then if they are pleased for you," he says: Whatever she is pleased to give with her own soul, without compulsion or disdain, then Allah has made it lawful for you to consume it, wholesome and pleasant.
