Translation · EN

4977 - My father narrated to us, Yahya ibn al-Mughirah al-Sa'di narrated to us, Jarir informed us, from Muslim al-A'war, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "And those who commit immorality from among your women" until His saying: "Then detain them in the houses." He said: When a woman committed adultery, she was detained until [the verse] was revealed: "Or Allah ordains for them a way."

4978 - My father narrated to us, Abu Husayn al-Razi narrated to us, Marwan—meaning al-Fazari—narrated to us, Muslim—meaning al-A'war—narrated to us, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas, similarly, except he said: They used to be detained in the houses until the verse of the prescribed punishments (hudud) was revealed. When it was revealed, they were brought out, and those upon whom the prescribed punishment was due were flogged.

4979 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabah narrated to us, Hajjaj narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, and Uthman ibn 'Ata, from Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "Then detain them in the houses." He said: This immorality was subject to these verses before Surah al-Nur was revealed concerning flogging and stoning. If she were to commit a clear act of immorality today, she would be brought out and stoned with stones. Then this verse abrogated it: "The woman and the man guilty of illegal sexual intercourse, flog each of them with a hundred stripes."

It was narrated from al-Hasan, Ikrimah, Abu Salih, Qatadah, 'Ata al-Khurasani, Zayd ibn Aslam, and al-Dahhak that it is abrogated.

His saying, the Exalted: "Until death claims them"

4980 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn Abdullah narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted: "Until death claims them," meaning: until the woman dies while she is in that condition.

His saying, the Exalted: "Or Allah ordains for them a way"

4981 - Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, Mubarak ibn Fadalah narrated to us, from al-Hasan, from Hittan ibn Abdullah al-Raqashi, from 'Ubadah that when the Revelation descended upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), that was recognizable in him. When "Or Allah ordains for them a way" was revealed, and when the revelation lifted, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Receive [this] from me, receive [this]! Allah has ordained a way: the unmarried for the unmarried is a hundred lashes and banishment for a year, and the married for the married is a hundred lashes and stoning with stones."
