3813 - Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, 'Uthman ibn 'Umar narrated to us, Malik (meaning Ibn Mighwal) narrated to us, from Ibrahim ibn Muhajir, from Mujahid, that Ibn 'Umar was praying when he recited: "Never will you attain the righteousness (al-birr) until you spend from that which you love," so he emancipated a slave girl whom he had intended to marry.
3814 - Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn Yazid al-Muqri' narrated to us, Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, who said: When the verse "Never will you attain the righteousness (al-birr) until you spend from that which you love" was revealed, Zayd brought a horse of his called Subul and said: "This, O Messenger of Allah, is for the cause of Allah." He said to Usamah: "Take it." He [the narrator] said: It was as if he felt troubled in his soul [by this], so he [the Prophet] said: "Allah has indeed accepted it from you."
His saying, the Exalted: "And whatever you spend of any good, indeed Allah is Knowing of it"
3815 - Musa ibn Harun al-Tusi informed us in what he wrote to me, al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Marwudhi narrated to us, Shayban ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And whatever you spend of any good, indeed Allah is Knowing of it," he says: That is preserved for you, and Allah is Knowing of it and appreciative of it.
His saying, the Exalted: "All food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel had made unlawful to himself"
[The First Aspect]
3816 - Yunus ibn Habib al-Asbahani narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, 'Abd al-Hamid ibn Bahram narrated to us, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, Ibn 'Abbas narrated to me, he said: When a group of Jews came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) one day, they said: "O Abu al-Qasim, tell us about matters we will ask you, which none knows except a prophet." He said: "Ask me whatever you wish, but provide the guarantee of Allah, and that which Ya'qub (Jacob) took from his sons, that if I tell you something and you recognize it, you will pledge allegiance to me upon Islam." They said: "That is for you." He said: "Then ask me whatever you wish." They said: "Inform us about the food that Israel (Jacob) made unlawful for himself before the Torah was revealed." He said: "Then I adjure you by Him who revealed the Torah to Musa (Moses), do you know that Israel, who is Ya'qub, suffered a severe illness, and his infirmity lasted a long time, so he made a vow to Allah that if He cured him of his infirmity, he would forbid the most beloved drink to him and the most beloved food to him; and the most beloved food to him was camel meat, and the most beloved drink to him was camel milk?" They said: "O Allah, yes." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "O Allah, bear witness against them."
