Translation · EN

5069 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And they have taken from you a solemn covenant," he said: It is the word of marriage by which their private parts are made lawful.

5070 - Abu Zur'ah and Kathir ibn Shihab narrated to us, both saying: Muhammad ibn Sa'id ibn Sabiq narrated to us, Abu Ja'far al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, regarding His saying: "And they have taken from you a solemn covenant," he said: The solemn covenant is that you have taken them by the trust of Allah, and you have made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah. Kathir ibn Shihab added: For the word of Allah is the tashahhud in the sermon (khutbah). He said: And it was among that which was given to the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the night he was taken on the Night Journey (Isra'), he said: I have made it such that the khutbah is not valid for your nation until they bear witness that you are My servant and My messenger. It was narrated from 'Ikrimah and Mujahid similar to the text of the hadith of Abu Zur'ah.

5071 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Numayr narrated to us, Yahya ibn Yaman narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And they have taken from you a solemn covenant," he said: It is His saying: "Then either keep [her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment.". Similar to this was narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah, al-Hasan, Qatadah, 'Ikrimah, al-Dahhak, al-Suddi, and Yahya ibn Abi Kathir.

His saying: "Solemn (ghalizan)"

5072 - Abu Bakr ibn Abi Musa narrated to us, Harun ibn Hatim narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik, regarding His saying: "ghalizan," he means: Severe (shadidan).

His saying: "And do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married"

5073 - My father narrated to us, Malik ibn Isma'il narrated to us, Qays ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, from Ash'ath ibn Siwar, from 'Adi ibn Thabit, from a man from the Ansar, who said: Abu Qays passed away, and he was among the righteous of the Ansar, so his son Qays proposed to his wife. She said: I only count you as a son, and you are among the righteous of your people, but I will go to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and ask for his command. She came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, Abu Qays has passed away. He said: May there be good (in that). She continued: His son Qays has proposed to me, and he is among the righteous of his people, but I only used to count him as a son, so what do you think? He said to her: Return to your house. He said: Then this verse was revealed: "And do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married, except what has already occurred."
