Translation · EN

3908 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Sufyan and Shu'bah, from Zubayd al-Yami, from Murrah, from 'Abd Allah regarding "Fear Allah with the due fear of Him": He said: That He should be obeyed and not disobeyed, remembered and not forgotten, and thanked and not denied. Abu Muhammad [Ibn Abi Hatim] said: It was narrated from Murrah al-Hamdani, al-Rabi' ibn Khuthaym, 'Amr ibn Maymun, al-Hasan, Tawus, Qatadah, Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, Abu Sinan, and al-Suddi something similar to that.

The second interpretation:

3909 - 'Abd Allah ibn Ayyub al-Mukharrimi narrated to us, Bakr ibn Bakkar narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from 'Ata' al-Wasiti, from Anas, who said: A servant will not fear Allah with the due fear of Him until he restrains his tongue.

The third interpretation:

3910 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Fear Allah with the due fear of Him," saying: It has not been abrogated; rather, the due fear of Him is to strive in the path of Allah as He deserves to be striven for, to not let the blame of any blamer affect them regarding Allah, and to stand for justice even against themselves, their parents, and their children.

The fourth interpretation:

3911 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Fear Allah with the due fear of Him, and do not die except as Muslims," he said: When this verse was revealed, the work became difficult for the people; they stood [in prayer] until their heels swelled and their foreheads became sore. Then Allah sent down a mitigation for the believers: "So fear Allah as much as you are able," and the first verse was abrogated. A similar interpretation was narrated from Zayd ibn Aslam. It was also narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah, Qatadah, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, al-Rabi' ibn Anas, and al-Suddi that "So fear Allah as much as you are able" abrogated it.
