His saying, the Almighty: "And your stepdaughters who are under your guardianship from your women"
[The First Aspect]
5087 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Musa narrated to us, Hisham—meaning ibn Yusuf—informed us, from Ibn Jurayj, Ibrahim ibn 'Ubayd ibn Rifa'ah narrated to me, Malik ibn Aws ibn al-Hadathan informed us, who said: I had a wife, and she passed away after she had borne children for me, and I was grieved for her. 'Ali ibn Abi Talib met me and said: "What is the matter with you?" I said: "My wife has passed away." 'Ali said: "Did she have a daughter?" I said: "Yes, and she is in Ta'if." He said: "Was she under your guardianship?" I said: "No, she is in Ta'if." He said: "Then marry her." I said: "Where does the saying of Allah the Almighty stand: 'And your stepdaughters who are under your guardianship'?" He said: "She was not under your guardianship; it only refers to if she were under your guardianship."
The Second Aspect:
5088 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, from Simak ibn al-Fadl, from a man, from 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, who said: The stepdaughter and the mother are the same; there is no harm in [marrying] them if he has not consummated the marriage with the woman.
5089 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Isra'il, from Jabir, from 'Amir, from Masruq, who said: Stepdaughters are lawful as long as the mothers are not married.
5090 - 'Abd Allah ibn Ahmad al-Dashtaki narrated to us, my father narrated to me, from Ibrahim—meaning al-Sa'igh—from Yazid—meaning al-Nahwi—who said: I asked him—meaning 'Ikrimah—[about a case]. He said: She is not lawful for him because he consummated the marriage with her mother. Allah the Almighty said: "And your stepdaughters who are under your guardianship from your women whom you have entered into," so she is prohibited.
His saying, the Almighty: "Whom you have entered into"
5091 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "From your women whom you have entered into," he said: "Entering into (al-dukhul) means sexual intercourse."
And it was narrated from Tawus that he said: "Entering into means sexual intercourse."
(1). Ibn Kathir said: This is a strong, established chain of transmission to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib according to the criteria of Muslim, and it is a very strange statement - 2/220.
