3923 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And remember the favor of Allah upon you," he said: The favors are the bounties of Allah.

His saying, the Exalted: "When you were enemies."

[The first interpretation]

3924 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding His saying: "And remember the favor of Allah upon you, when you were enemies" in the Jahiliyyah.

3925 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' regarding His saying: "When you were enemies," killing one another, and your strong would eat your weak, until Allah brought Islam and reconciled you through it.

The second interpretation:

3926 - 'Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed us in what he wrote to me, Zayd ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj regarding "When you were enemies," he said: That which was between the Aws and the Khazraj in the matter of 'Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

His saying, the Exalted: "Then He reconciled your hearts."

3927 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "And remember the favor of Allah upon you, when you were enemies, then He reconciled your hearts" through Islam. It was narrated from Mujahid, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, and al-Rabi' ibn Anas something similar to that.

3928 - My father narrated to us, Abu Ma'mar 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr ibn Abi al-Hajjaj al-Minqari narrated to us, 'Abd al-Warith narrated to us, 'Ali ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Anas ibn Malik who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O assembly of the Ansar, with what do you reproach me? Did I not come to you when you were astray and Allah guided you through me? And I came to you when you were enemies and Allah reconciled your hearts?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah."

His saying, the Exalted: "Then you became brothers by His favor."

3929 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding "Then you became brothers by His favor," meaning: by His mercy, i.e., Islam; and the believers are brothers.
