[His saying, the Exalted: "O you who have believed"]
Its explanation has already preceded.
His saying, the Exalted: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated."
[The first view]
5351 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from 'Amr ibn Shurahbil, who said: 'Umar said: O Allah, clarify for us regarding wine. So it was revealed: "Say, 'In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people'" (1). He said: O Allah, clarify for us regarding wine. So it was revealed: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated." He then said: O Allah, clarify for us regarding wine. So it was revealed: "Indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement," until he reached: "So will you not desist?" (2) (3).
The second view:
5352 - Muhammad ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Sa'd al-Dashtaki narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, who said: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf prepared food for us and invited us, and gave us some wine to drink. The wine affected us, and the time for prayer came, so they put forward so-and-so. He said: So he recited: "Say, 'O disbelievers, I do not worship what you worship, and we worship what you worship.'" He said: So Allah, the Exalted, revealed: "O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying" (4).
The third view:
5353 - Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, Simak ibn Harb informed me, he said: I heard Mus'ab ibn Sa'd narrating from Sa'd, who said: Four verses were revealed concerning me. A man from the Ansar prepared [a feast], and we ate and drank until we were intoxicated. Then we boasted, and a man raised the jawbone of a camel and struck Sa'd's nose with it, so Sa'd became nose-injured, and that was before wine was prohibited. So it was revealed: "O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated."
5354 - Musa ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Masruqi Abu 'Isa and Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us; they both said: al-Hafari, meaning Abu Dawud, narrated to us, from Sufyan, from 'Ali ibn Badhi'ah, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated."
