He said: [This] was abrogated by [the verse]: "O you who have believed, when you rise to prayer, wash your faces and your hands" (1).
It was narrated from 'Ikrimah, Mujahid, al-Hasan, al-Dahhak, Qatadah, 'Ata' al-Khurasani, and Zayd ibn Aslam that they said: It is abrogated.
His saying, the Exalted: "Prayer"
5355 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Hajjaj narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj and 'Uthman ibn 'Ata', from 'Ata' al-Khurasani, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying in Surah al-Nisa': "Do not approach prayer," he said: The prayer of the mosques.
His saying, the Exalted: "While you are intoxicated"

5356 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Nubayt al-Ashja'i, from al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated," he said: Intoxication here is sleep.
The second view:
5357 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "While you are intoxicated," meaning: lightheaded from drink.
His saying, the Exalted: "Until you know what you are saying"
5358 - And by the same chain from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "Until you know what you are saying," meaning: what you recite in your prayer.
His saying, the Exalted: "And [do not approach prayer] in a state of janaba (major ritual impurity), except those passing through [a place of prayer]"

5359 - Ahmad ibn Yahya ibn Malik al-Susi narrated to us, Abu Badr narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to me—Abu Badr said: And he is not al-Mas'udi—from al-Minhal ibn 'Amr, from Zirr ibn Hubaysh, from 'Ali, who said: This verse was revealed regarding the traveler: "And [do not approach prayer] in a state of janaba, except those passing through [a place of prayer] until you have washed [your whole body]." He said: If he is in a state of janaba and does not find water, he performs tayammum and prays until he finds water, and when he finds water, he performs ghusl and prays.
