[His saying, the Exalted: "Twisting with their tongues"]
[The first interpretation]
5401 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Twisting with their tongues," he said: Distorting with falsehood.
The second interpretation:
5402 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Twisting with their tongues," he said: They twist their tongues.
The third interpretation:
5403 - My father narrated to us, Ya'qub ibn Isma'il ibn Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, Abu Qutaybah narrated to us, Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, regarding His saying: "Twisting with their tongues," he said: To us, meaning we understand it from its [intended] places.
His saying, the Exalted: "And stabbing at the religion"
5404 - Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid al-Bayruti informed us by way of recitation, Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb informed me, 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' informed me, from his father, regarding His saying: "Twisting with their tongues and stabbing at the religion": He twists his tongue with that and stabs at the religion.
5405 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr informed us, Salamah informed us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, and Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah, who said: Rifa'ah ibn Zayd ibn al-Tabut—who was one of the notables of the Jews—used to, when he spoke to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, twist his tongue and say: "Lend us your ear, O Muhammad, until we make you understand," then he would stab at Islam and disparage it, so Allah, the Exalted, revealed concerning them: "Twisting with their tongues and stabbing at the religion."
His saying, the Exalted: "And if they had said, 'We hear and we obey'"
5406 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "We hear and we obey": ... We hear the Qur'an that has come from Allah, and we obey: They acknowledged to Allah that they would obey Him in His command and His prohibition.
