His saying, the Exalted: "Or We curse them as We cursed the people of the Sabbath, and the command of Allah is always executed."

5419 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, and al-Hasan said regarding His saying: "Or We curse them as We cursed the people of the Sabbath": He says: Or We make them apes—and it was narrated from al-Suddi and Qatadah similarly.

His saying, the Exalted: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating anything with Him."

5420 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Yunus narrated to us, Abu Bakr ibn 'Ayyash narrated to us, from Musa ibn 'Ubaydah, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Ubaydah, from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "There is no servant who dies not associating anything with Allah but that forgiveness is made lawful for him; if He wills, He will forgive him, and if He wills, He will punish him." He said: Indeed, Allah has made an exception, and said: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with Him, but He forgives what is besides that to whom He wills."

5421 - 'Abd al-Malik ibn Abi 'Abd al-Rahman al-Muqri' narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn 'Asim narrated to us, Salih—meaning al-Murri, Abu Bishr—narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, who said: We used to have no doubt concerning those to whom Allah has decreed the Fire in the Book of Allah, until this verse was revealed to us: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with Him, but He forgives what is besides that to whom He wills." So when we heard it, we refrained from bearing witness [against them] and left matters to Allah.

5422 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' regarding His saying: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with Him, but He forgives what is besides that to whom He wills."

Mujabbar informed me, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar, that he said: When this verse was revealed: "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah," a man stood up and said: "And shirk (polytheism), O Prophet of Allah?" The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, disliked that and said: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with Him, but He forgives what is besides that to whom He wills."

5423 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih informed me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with Him": Allah has forbidden forgiveness for one who dies while he is a disbeliever, and He left it—for the people of monotheism—to His will, and He did not cause them to despair of forgiveness.
