His saying, the Exalted: "Have you not seen those who claim purity for themselves?"
[The First Aspect]
5430 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Musaffa narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Jumayr narrated to us, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Bashir ibn Abi 'Amrah, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas who said: The Jews used to bring their children forward for them to pray, and they would offer their sacrifices, claiming that they had no faults and no sins. They lied. Allah said: "I do not purify a person of sin by another who has no sin." Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: "Have you not seen those who claim purity for themselves?" It was narrated from Mujahid, Abu Malik, al-Suddi, 'Ikrimah, and al-Dahhak something similar to that.
[The Second Aspect]
5431 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, from al-Hasan regarding His saying: "Have you not seen those who claim purity for themselves?" He said: They are the Jews and the Christians; they said: "We are the children of Allah and His beloved ones," and they said: "None shall enter Paradise except one who was a Jew or a Christian."
[The Third Aspect]
5432 - Abu al-Azhar al-Naysaburi informed me in what he wrote to me, Wahb ibn Jarir narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn al-Hakam, from al-Dahhak: As for His saying: "Have you not seen those who claim purity for themselves?" The Jews said: "We have no sins, just as our forefathers have no sins," so Allah, the Exalted, revealed that concerning them.
His saying, the Exalted: "Rather, Allah purifies whom He wills."
5433 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Musaffa narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Himyar narrated to us, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Bashir ibn Abi 'Amrah, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Rather, Allah purifies whom He wills," Allah the Exalted said: "I do not purify a person of sin by another who has no sin."
His saying, the Exalted: "And they will not be wronged, not even by a fatil (a tiny thread).
[The First Aspect]
5434 - My father narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, Isra'il narrated to us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And they will not be wronged, not even by a fatil." He said: The fatil is what is twisted between the two fingers. And it was narrated from Mujahid—in one of the narrations—Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Abu Malik, and al-Suddi something similar to that.
