His saying, the Exalted: "Those are the ones of whom Allah knows what is in their hearts, so turn away from them," up to His saying: "...profound."
5555 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, who said: A man from the hypocrites and a man from the Jews disputed. The hypocrite said: "Let us go to Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf," and the Jew said: "Let us go to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him." So Allah the Exalted said: "Those are the ones of whom Allah knows what is in their hearts, so turn away from them and admonish them and speak to them in their souls a word, profound."
His saying, the Exalted: "And if they, when they had wronged themselves, had come to you," up to His saying: "...Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful."
5556 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And if they, when they had wronged themselves..." up to His saying: "...the Merciful." This is concerning the Jewish man and the Muslim man who sought judgment from Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf.
5557 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Yazid ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz narrated to us, Abu 'Abd Allah Sulayman ibn Hassan narrated to us, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from 'Ata' ibn Dinar: Sa'id ibn Jubayr was asked about seeking forgiveness (istighfar), and he said: Seeking forgiveness is of two types: one of them is by speech, and the other is by action. As for seeking forgiveness by speech, it is the saying of Allah the Exalted: "And if they, when they had wronged themselves, had come to you and asked forgiveness of Allah and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them."
His saying, the Exalted: "But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves."
[The First Aspect]
5558 - Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, al-Layth and Yunus narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, that 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to him, that 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to him, from al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam, that he disputed with a man from the Ansar who had witnessed Badr with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, regarding a stream in al-Harrah which they both used to irrigate their date palms. The Ansari said: "Let the water flow," but he [al-Zubayr] refused him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Irrigate, O Zubayr, then send [the water] to your neighbor." The Ansari became angry and said: "O Messenger of Allah, is it because he is the son of your paternal aunt?" The face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, changed color.
