the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, met a man who had some booty with him, so he said: "Peace be upon you." They killed him and took his booty. Then Allah, the Almighty, revealed: "And do not say to one who offers you the greeting: 'You are not a believer.'" The Muqri' said in his hadith: The Muslims met a man.
5826 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, al-Muharibi narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Yazid ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Qusayt, from Ibn Abi Hadrad al-Aslami, from his father, he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent us on a military expedition (sariyya). In that expedition were Abu Qatada al-Ansari and Muhallim ibn Jaththama ibn Qays, and I was among them. We were on our way when 'Amir ibn al-Adbat al-Ashja'i passed by us. He greeted us with the greeting of Islam, so we held back from him. Then Muhallim ibn Jaththama attacked him, killed him, and seized his camel... which had milk with it. When we came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, the Quran was revealed concerning us: "O you who have believed, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, so investigate," until the end of the verse.
5827 - My father narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn al-Minhal and Abu Salama narrated to us, both saying: Hammad, meaning Ibn Salama, narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Yazid ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Qusayt, from Ibn Hadrad al-Aslami, from his father. In the hadith of Hajjaj, it is from Abu Hadrad, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent him, Abu Qatada, and Muhallim ibn Jaththama. He mentioned the like of it and added: When they came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, they informed him of that. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Did you kill him after he said: 'I have believed in Allah'?" And the Quran was revealed: "O you who have believed, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, so investigate," until the end of the verse.
5828 - Ibrahim ibn 'Atiq al-Dimashqi narrated to us, Marwan, meaning Ibn Muhammad al-Tatari, narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, Abu al-Zubayr narrated to me, from Jabir, he said: This verse was revealed: "And do not say to one who offers you the greeting: 'You are not a believer,'" regarding Mirdas.
His saying, the Almighty: "You are not a believer."
5829 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talha, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "You are not a believer," he said: Allah has forbidden the believers to say to one who testifies that there is no god but Allah: "You are not a believer," just as He has forbidden them [to eat] carrion. So he is secure regarding his property and his blood, so do not reject his statement.

أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلا مَعَهُ غَنِيمَةٌ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فقتلوه وأخذوا غنيمة، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: وَلا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِناً «١» وَقَالَ الْمُقْرِئُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: لَقِيَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ رَجُلا.
٥٨٢٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، ثنا الْمُحَارِبِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قُسَيْطٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي حَدْرَدٍ الأَسْلَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ، وَفِي تِلْكَ السَّرِيَّةِ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ وَمُحَلِّمُ بْنُ جَثَّامَةَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، وأنا منهم فينا نَحْنُ إِذْ مَرَّ عَامِرُ بْنُ الأَضْبَطِ الأَشْجَعِيُّ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْنَا بِتَحِيَّةِ الإِسْلامِ، فَأَمْسَكْنَا عَنْهُ، ثُمَّ حَمَلَ عَلَيْهِ مُحَلِّمُ بْنُ جَثَّامَةَ، فَقَتَلَهُ وَسَلَبَهُ بَعِيرَهُ ( ... ) «٢»
كَانَ مَعَهُ فِيهِ لَبَنٌ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، نَزَلَ فِينَا الْقُرْآنَ: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَتَبَيَّنُوا إِلَى آخِرِ الآيَةِ.
٥٨٢٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ وَأَبُو سَلَمَةَ قَالا: ثنا حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِيَانِ ابْنَ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قُسَيْطٍ عَنِ ابْنِ حَدْرَدِ الأَسْلَمِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، وَفِي حَدِيثِ الْحَجَّاجِ عَنْ أَبِي حَدْرَدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَهُ وَأَبَا قَتَادَةَ وَمُحَلِّمَ بْنَ جَثَّامَةَ، فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ وَزَادَ فِيهِ: فَلَمَّا قَدِمُوا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَخْبَرُوهُ بِذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَقَتَلْتَهُ بَعْدَ مَا قَالَ: آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ. وَنَزَلُ الْقُرْآنُ: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فتبينوا إِلَى آخِرِ الآيَةِ.
٥٨٢٨ - حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَتِيقٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ثنا مَرْوَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ الطَّاطَرِيَّ، ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: أُنْزَلِتْ هَذِهِ الأَيَةُ: وَلا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِناً فِي مِرْدَاسٍ.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، عن ابن عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلَهُ: لَسْتَ مُؤْمِناً قَالَ: حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْ يَقُولُوا لِمَنْ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِناً، كَمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَيْتَةَ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ عَلَى مَالِهِ وَدَمِهِ، فَلَا تَرُدُّوا عَلَيْهِ قوله.
