Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 3 · Page 350His saying, the Exalted: 'Indeed, the disbelievers are ever to you a clear enemy'

Translation · EN

5893 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Khalid narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "There is no sin upon you that you shorten the prayer," he said: That is at the time of fighting; the mounted man prays (with two takbirs) facing whatever direction he may be.

5894 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "When you travel throughout the land, there is no sin upon you that you shorten the prayer if you fear" - the verse. The prayer, when you pray two rak'ahs during travel, is the completion of the shortening; it is not permissible [to do otherwise], unless you fear that those who disbelieve will afflict you regarding the prayer, in which case the shortening is one rak'ah.

5895 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "There is no sin upon you that you shorten the prayer," it was revealed on the day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was at 'Usfan, and the polytheists were at Dajnan. They encountered each other, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led his companions in the Dhuhr (noon) prayer, performing their bowing, prostration, and standing altogether at once, and the polytheists intended to raid their luggage and heavy baggage.

His saying, Exalted is He: "Indeed, the disbelievers are ever to you a clear enemy."

5896 - Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Abu 'Ayyash al-Zuraqi, he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at 'Usfan, and the prayer, the Dhuhr prayer, arrived, while Khalid ibn al-Walid was over the polytheists. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led his companions in the Dhuhr prayer, and the polytheists said: "They have a prayer after this which is more beloved to them than their children, their wealth, and themselves," meaning the 'Asr (afternoon) prayer. He said: Then Gabriel descended to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him [of this] between the Dhuhr and 'Asr prayers, and this verse was revealed: "And when you are among them and lead them in prayer..." until the end of it.

His saying, Exalted is He: "Let a group of them stand with you."

5897 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Abu Bishr, from Mujahid, he said: "The group" (al-ta'ifah) is from one man to a thousand men.
