Ishaq, regarding what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "The righteous," meaning those who fear the punishment of Allah in abandoning what they recognize of guidance, and they hope for His mercy by believing in what has come from Him.
4023 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "The righteous" are the believers.
His saying, the Exalted: "The example of what they spend in this worldly life"
4024 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "The example of what they spend in this worldly life"—it is the spending of the disbeliever in this world. The same has been narrated from al-Hasan and al-Suddi.
His saying, the Exalted: "[is like that of] a wind within which is frost"
[The first interpretation]
4025 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Bashir and Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd narrated to us, from Harun ibn 'Antarah, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding "within which is frost": He said: It is cold. The same has been narrated from al-Hasan, 'Ikrimah, Sa'id ibn Jubayr (in one of the narrations), Shurahbil ibn Sa'd, al-Suddi, al-Rabi', al-Dahhak, and Qatadah.
And the second interpretation:
4026 - Al-Hasan ibn 'Arafah narrated to us, Khalaf ibn Khalifah narrated to us, from Abu Humayd al-Ru'asi, from 'Antarah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "within which is frost," he said: It contains fire. The same has been narrated from Mujahid in one of the narrations.
And the third interpretation:
4027 - Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid informed us by way of reading, Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb ibn Shabur informed me, 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' informed us, from his father 'Ata', regarding "within which is frost," that it is a wind containing cold and ice.
His saying, the Exalted: "[that] strikes the harvest of a people who wronged themselves"
4028 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "The example of what they spend in this worldly life is like that of a wind within which is frost that strikes the harvest of a people who wronged themselves and destroyed it." He says: The likeness of what the polytheists spend—which is not accepted from them—is like this crop; when a people who are wrongdoers plant it, and it is struck by a wind containing frost—and al-sirr is the cold—it strikes it and destroys it. Thus, they spent, but their shirk (polytheism) destroyed them.
