Allah, the Exalted, says: "Yes, if you remain patient and conscious of Allah." This was a promise from Allah on the day of Uhud, which He presented to His Prophet: that if the believers remained conscious of Allah and patient, I would reinforce them with five thousand angels, marked [for battle]. However, the Muslims fled on the day of Uhud and turned their backs, so Allah did not reinforce them.
4099 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us, Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said regarding "Yes, if you remain patient and conscious of Allah," he said: Meaning, if you remain patient against My enemy and obey My command.
4100 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, "and they come upon you," meaning the disbelievers, yet they did not kill them at that moment; and that was on the day of Uhud.
His saying, the Exalted: "from their immediate onset [i.e., from their current position/anger]"
[The First Interpretation]
4101 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas: "and they come upon you from their immediate onset," he says: From this journey of theirs. And it is said: Rather, it is from this anger of theirs.
4102 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Waki' and Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, from Malik ibn Mighwal, who said: I heard Abu Salih regarding His saying: "and they come upon you from their immediate onset," he said: From their anger.
Abu Muhammad said: Meaning by "from their immediate onset [fawrihi]" is anger.
It was narrated from Mujahid and 'Ikrimah: From their anger.
The Second Interpretation:
4103 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "and they come upon you from their immediate onset," he said: From this direction of theirs.
It was narrated from al-Hasan, al-Dahhak, al-Rabi', and Qatadah similarly, except that al-Dahhak said: From their anger and their direction.
His saying, the Exalted: "your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand [angels]"
4104 - Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Musa ibn Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn Mansur narrated to us, from al-Hasan regarding His saying: "your Lord will reinforce you," he said: On the day of Badr.
