Uhud. They were two groups on that day; as for the believers, Allah covered them with slumber, and the other faction: the hypocrites, who had no concern but for themselves, the most cowardly of people, the most terrified, and the most failing to uphold the truth.
His saying, the Exalted: "Say, 'Indeed, the affair belongs to Allah entirely.'"
4371 - Ali ibn Tahir narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-'Ala' narrated to us, 'Uthman ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah narrated to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Gabriel said: "O Muhammad."
His saying, the Exalted: "They conceal within themselves what they do not reveal to you."
4372 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas regarding His saying: "They conceal within themselves what they do not reveal to you," he said: Among what they concealed within themselves was that they said: "If we had had any say in the matter, we would not have been killed right here."
4373 - My father narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Idris narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: Yahya ibn 'Abbad (meaning the son of 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr) narrated to me, from his father, from 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, who said: Al-Zubayr said: "I truly saw myself with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when the fear intensified upon us. Allah sent sleep upon us, such that there was not a man among us but that his chin was against his chest." He said: "By Allah, I could hear the statement of Mu'attib ibn Qushayr, though I heard it as if in a dream: 'If we had had any say in the matter, we would not have been killed right here.'" He thus committed it to memory from him, and concerning that, Allah revealed: "If we had had any say in the matter, we would not have been killed right here," regarding the statement of Mu'attib.
4374 - Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Musa ibn Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn Mansur narrated to us, who said: I asked al-Hasan about His saying: "saying, 'If we had had any say in the matter, we would not have been killed right here,'" he said: That was the hypocrite. When those who were killed from among the companions of Muhammad were killed, they came to 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy and said to him: "What do you think?" He said: "By Allah, we have no say; if we had had any say in the matter, we would not have been killed right here."
His saying, the Exalted: "Say, 'Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their places of death.'"
4375 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi', who said: They said: "If we had had any say in the matter, we would not have been killed right here, and if we had been in our houses, the killing would not have befallen us." Allah the Exalted said: "Say, 'Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their places of death.'"
