[His saying, the Exalted: "The day the two armies met."]
[The first interpretation]
4382 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya narrated from 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met," meaning the day of Uhud, when the two armies met—the army of the Muslims and the army of the polytheists—the Muslims were defeated and withdrew from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he remained with eighteen men.
The second interpretation:
4383 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Darda' 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Munib narrated to us, Abu Mu'adh al-Fadl ibn Khalid narrated to us, 'Ubayd ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "The day the two armies met," it is the day of Badr; and Badr is a spring to the right of the road to Mecca, between Mecca and Medina.
4384 - My father narrated to us, al-Nufayli narrated to us, Hushaym narrated to us, from Isma'il ibn Salim who said: I heard al-Sha'bi saying: The night of the seventeenth, the night of Al-Furqan (the Criterion), is the day the two armies met.
His saying, the Exalted: "Indeed, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some what they had earned."
4385 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Indeed, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some what they had earned," meaning when they left their position and disobeyed the command of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) when he said to the archers on the day of Uhud: "Do not depart from your place," and some of them left the position.
4386 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: "Indeed, it was Satan who caused them to slip," and those whom Satan caused to slip were 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, Sa'd ibn 'Uthman, and 'Uqbah ibn 'Uthman, the two Ansarites, and then the Zurqiyyan.
His saying, the Exalted: "But Allah has already pardoned them."
4387 - Muhammad ibn Muslim narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Mubarak ibn Fadalah reported to us, from al-Hasan regarding His saying: "Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met, indeed, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some what they had earned. But Allah has already pardoned them." How did He pardon them when seventy of them were killed, seventy were wounded, and seventy were taken captive? And the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was injured, his incisor tooth was broken, and his helmet was smashed upon his head. Al-Hasan said: "But Allah has already pardoned you" means He did not annihilate you."
