His saying, the Exalted: "And said to their brothers when they traveled in the land."
[The first interpretation]
4395 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: "And said to their brothers when they traveled in the land," [referring to] those who forbade their brothers from fighting in the way of Allah, and from traveling in the land in obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).
And the second interpretation:
4396 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding "And said to their brothers when they traveled in the land," he said: As for "when they traveled in the land," it refers to trade.
His saying, the Exalted: "Or were fighting."
4397 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding "or were fighting," he said: It is the statement of the hypocrite 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy, the hypocrite.
His saying, the Exalted: "If they had been with us, they would not have died or been killed."
4398 - Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Musa ibn Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn Mansur narrated to us, from al-Hasan regarding His saying: "If they had been with us, they would not have died or been killed," he said: This is the statement of the disbelievers. When a man dies, [one of them] says: "Had he been with us, he would not have died." So do not say as the disbelievers said.
4399 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said regarding "If they had been with us, they would not have died or been killed," he said: And they say: "Had they obeyed us, they would not have died or been killed."
4400 - 'Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed us in what he wrote to me, Zayd ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj regarding "they would not have died or been killed," he said: [This was said] regarding those who returned to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), numbering three hundred and some odd [men].
His saying, the Exalted: "So that Allah may make that a regret within their hearts."
4401 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "a regret within their hearts," he said: He saddens them and it does not benefit them anything; meaning, their statement saddens them. It was narrated from Abu Malik similarly.
