[6497] My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Abi al-Jawari narrated to us, al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, from al-Awza'i, from Hassan ibn 'Atiyyah regarding His saying: "And so judge between them by what Allah has revealed," he said: In His Book.
His saying, the Exalted: "And do not follow their inclinations"
[6498] It was mentioned from Muhammad ibn Ishaq: Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, Sa'id ibn Jubayr or 'Ikrimah narrated to me, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Ka'b ibn Asad, Ibn Suriya, and 'Abd Allah ibn Nuran said to one another: "Let us go to Muhammad, perhaps we may tempt him away from his religion, for he is only a human." So they came to him and said: "O Muhammad, you know that we are the rabbis of the Jews, their nobles, and their masters; if we follow you, the Jews will follow us and will not oppose us. There is a dispute between us and our people, so we will have them take their case to you, and you will judge for us against them, and we will believe in you and affirm you." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, refused that from them. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed regarding them: "And so judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations and beware of them, lest they tempt you..." (the verse).
His saying, the Exalted: "And beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you"
[6499] Abu Yazid ibn Aslam informed us, saying regarding His saying: "And beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you," he said: That they say the Torah says such-and-such. He said: And He clarified for him what is in the Torah.
His saying, the Exalted: "But if they turn away, then know that Allah only intends to afflict them with some of their sins"
[6500] Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "But if they turn away," meaning: the disbelievers.
His saying, the Exalted: "And indeed, many of the people are disobedient"
[6501] Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj narrated to us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding His saying: "disobedient" (fasiqun), he says: The liars.
His saying, the Exalted: "Then is it the judgment of the time of ignorance they desire?"
[6502] My father narrated to us, Abu Salamah narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, from Hisham ibn 'Urwah, from his father, he said: The time of ignorance was called 'al-'alamiyyah' (the world-encompassing) until a woman came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, in the time of ignorance, such-and-such happened." Then Allah revealed the mention of the 'Jahiliyyah' (time of ignorance).
