His saying, the Almighty: 'That is the bounty of Allah, which He bestows upon whom He wills.'

[6545] Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: 'He bestows it upon whom He wills,' he said: He singles out with it whom He wills.

His saying, the Almighty: 'Your ally is none but Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed.'

[6546] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih—the scribe of al-Layth—narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: 'Your ally is none but Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed,' he means: Whoever submits [to Islam], Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed become his allies.

His saying, the Almighty: 'And those who have believed.'

[6547] Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, al-Muharibi narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Sulayman, he said: I asked Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn 'Ali about His saying: 'Your ally is none but Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed.' I said: Was it revealed concerning 'Ali? He said: 'Ali is one of those who have believed.

[6548] al-Hasan ibn 'Arafah narrated to us, 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-Rahman Abu Hafs narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: 'Your ally is none but Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed,' he said: They are the believers, and 'Ali is among them.

[6549] al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman al-Muradi narrated to us, Ayyub ibn Suwayd narrated to us, from 'Uqbah ibn Abi Hakim, regarding His saying: 'Your ally is none but Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed,' he said: 'Ali ibn Abi Talib.

His saying, the Almighty: 'Who establish prayer and give zakah.'

[6550] 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ibrahim Duhaym narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Namir narrated to us, he said: al-Zuhri said: Establishing it is that you perform the five prayers at their appointed times.

His saying, the Almighty: 'And give zakah while they are bowing.'

[The First Aspect]

[6551] Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, al-Fadl ibn Dukayn Abu Nu'aym al-Ahwal narrated to us, Musa ibn Qays al-Hadrami narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, he said: 'Ali gave his ring as charity while he was bowing, so it was revealed: 'Your ally is none but Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed who establish prayer and give zakah while they are bowing.'

Ibn Kathir said: All of these verses were revealed concerning 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) when he renounced his alliance with the Jews and was pleased with the authority (wilayah) of Allah, His Messenger, and the believers. So everyone who is pleased with the authority of Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, is successful in this world and the Hereafter. 3/131.
