your religion other than the truth, and do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before and misled many and have strayed from the straight path.

[6658] Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Hakim narrated to me in writing: Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "And do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before and misled many," he said: Their followers.

His saying, the Almighty: "And have strayed from the straight path."

[6659] Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa’ narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And have strayed from the straight path," he said: They are the Jews.

[6660] Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Hakim informed me in writing: Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "And have strayed from the straight path," he said: From the justice (adl) of the path.

His saying, the Almighty: "Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel."

[6661] Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj and Harun ibn Ishaq al-Hamdani narrated to us, both said: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Muharibi narrated to us, from al-‘Ala’ ibn al-Musayyib, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr ibn Murrah, from Salim al-Aftas, from Abu ‘Ubaydah, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "A man from the Children of Israel used to see his brother committing a sin and would forbid him from it as a reprimand. When the next day came, what he saw of his (behavior) did not prevent him from being his dining companion, his close associate, and his partner"—(Harun added in his narration: "and his drinking companion"). Then they agreed on the text: "When Allah saw that from them, He struck the hearts of some of them against others and cursed them upon the tongue of their Prophet David and Jesus, son of Mary; that is because they disobeyed and were transgressing." Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you must enjoin the good, forbid the evil, take the hand of the wrongdoer, and restrain him upon the truth, or else Allah will strike the hearts of some of you against others or He will curse you as He cursed them." The sequence is that of Abu Sa‘id.

His saying, the Almighty: "Upon the tongue of David and Jesus, son of Mary."

[6662] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah narrated to me, from Salih, from ‘Ali ibn Abi
