Khalid, from Qays, from ‘Abd Allah, who said: We were with the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) while we were young, and we said: O Messenger of Allah, should we not castrate ourselves? He forbade us from that, then he granted us a concession to marry a woman [with a dowry of] a garment. Then ‘Abd Allah recited: "O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful to you."
[6689] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding his saying: "O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful to you," he said: They were a group of the companions of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) who said: We shall cut off our private parts, abandon the desires of the world, and wander in the land as the monks do. This reached the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), so he mentioned it to them, and they said: Yes [we intended that]. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "But I fast and break my fast, I pray and I sleep, and I marry women. So whoever adopts my Sunnah is of me, and whoever does not adopt my Sunnah is not of me."
It was narrated from Abu Malik al-Ghifari that this verse was revealed concerning ‘Uthman ibn Maz‘un, and he mentioned something similar to it.
[6690] Ahmad ibn ‘Affan narrated to us, Abu Mu‘awiyah ibn Nahr narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Ibrahim, from Hammam ibn al-Harith, from ‘Amr ibn Shurahbil, he said: Ma‘qil ibn Muqarrin came to ‘Abd Allah and said: I have prohibited two beds [for myself]. He then recited this verse: "O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful to you" to the end of the verse.
[The Second Aspect]
[6691] Usayd ibn ‘Asim narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn Hafs narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Mansur, from Abu al-Duha, from Masruq, he said: We were with ‘Abd Allah and we came and chose a man. ‘Abd Allah said to him: Come closer, and they took [the man]. He said to him: I have prohibited eating it. ‘Abd Allah said: Then eat, and offer an expiation for your oath. Then he recited this verse: "O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful to you." (1)
[The Third Aspect]
[6692] Yunus ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la narrated to us, Ibn Wahb informed me, Hisham ibn Sa‘id informed me that Zayd ibn Aslam narrated to him that a guest from his family invited ‘Abd Allah ibn Rawahah while he was with the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Then he returned to his family and found they had not fed their guest, waiting for him.
