"Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths." And she used to say: It is the thing a person swears upon, desiring nothing but the truth, yet it turns out to be contrary to what he swore upon. It has been narrated from Abu Hurayrah, Ibn ‘Abbas (in one of his two sayings), Sulayman ibn Yasar, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, Mujahid, Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i (in one of his two sayings), al-Hasan, Zurarah ibn Awfa, Abu Malik, ‘Ata’ al-Khurasani, Bakr ibn ‘Abd Allah, one of the two sayings of ‘Ikrimah, Habib ibn Abi Thabit, al-Suddi, Makhul, Tawus, Qatadah, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, al-Rabi‘ ibn Anas, Rabi‘ah, and Yahya ibn Sa‘id something similar to that.
It has been narrated from ‘A’ishah that she held both sayings together in a single report.
[6705] ‘Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Shayban narrated to us, from Jabir, from ‘Ata’ ibn Abi Rabah, from ‘A’ishah, who said: It is his saying, "No, by Allah" and "Yes, by Allah," while he believes he is being truthful, yet it is not so.
[The Third Aspect]
[6706] Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, ‘Uqbah ibn Khalid narrated to me, from ‘Uqbah, from Abu Bishr, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, regarding "Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths": He said: It is a man who swears to perform an act of disobedience, meaning: that he will not pray or perform any good deed.
[The Fourth Aspect]
[6707] al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi‘ narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, he said: Hushaym said, al-Mughirah informed me, from Ibrahim, who said: It is a man who swears upon a thing and then forgets.
[The Fifth Aspect]
[6708] My father informed us, he said: It reached me from Yahya... from Ibn ‘Ajlan and ‘Amr ibn al-Harith, from Zayd ibn Aslam, regarding "Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths": He said: It is the saying of a man, "May Allah blind my sight if I do not do such-and-such," or "May Allah expel me from my wealth if I do not come to you," and it is thus.
[The Sixth Aspect]
[6709] My father informed me, Abu al-Jamahir narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir narrated to us, Abu Mubashshir narrated to me, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The unintentional oath (laghw al-yamin) is that you prohibit what Allah has made lawful for you; for that, there is no expiation upon you. And it has been narrated from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr something similar.
