His saying, the Almighty: "show gratitude."

[6741] Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas, the freedman of the Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Amr narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: "So that you may show gratitude," meaning: "So fear Me, for that is the gratitude for My blessings."

His saying, the Almighty: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants [al-khamr]."

[6742] Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Abi Ghaniyah narrated to us, Abu Hayyan al-Taymi narrated to us, from al-Sha‘bi, from Ibn ‘Umar, from ‘Umar, who said: "The prohibition of intoxicants was revealed when it was being made from five things: barley, wheat, grapes, dates, and honey. And intoxicants [al-khamr] are whatever clouds [khamara] the intellect."

[6743] My father narrated to us, Muslim ibn Ibrahim ibn Hisham al-Dastawa’i narrated to us, Qatadah narrated to us, from Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib, who said: "Intoxicants were only named al-khamr because their pure part rises and their dregs sink."

[6744] My father narrated to us, ‘Abd Allah ibn Raja’ narrated to us, ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Abi Salamah narrated to us, from Hilal ibn Abi Hilal, from ‘Ata’ ibn Yasar, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr, who said: "This verse which is in the Qur'an: 'O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful,' exists in the Torah: 'Indeed, Allah sent down the Truth so that He might remove and invalidate through it games, lutes, dancing, canaries [meaning the reed flute], and pipes [meaning the tambourine], the qanabir [lutes], poetry, and intoxicants for whoever tastes them.' Allah swore by His oath and His Might: 'Whoever drinks it after it has been prohibited, I shall surely make him thirsty on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever abandons it after I have prohibited it, I shall surely give him to drink of it in the Garden of Firdaws.'"

[6745] Ahmad ibn Mansur al-Ramadi narrated to us, Hisham ibn ‘Ammar narrated to us, Sadaqah narrated to us, ‘Uthman ibn Abi al-‘Atikah narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn Yazid, from al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah, from Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari, from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said: "Avoid these marked dice which are used for game-playing, for they are from [the category of] gambling [al-maysir]."

[6746] Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqri’ narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Umayr and Ibrahim ibn Muslim al-Hajari, from Abu al-Ahwas, from ‘Abd Allah, who said: "Beware of these marked dice, for they are the gambling of the non-Arabs [al-‘ajam]." It was narrated from ‘Ali, Ibn ‘Umar, and ‘Aishah something similar to that.
