His saying, the Almighty: "And whoever opposes the Messenger after the guidance has become clear to him."

[5964] My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Abi Shu'ayb al-Harrani narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from 'Asim ibn 'Umar ibn Qatadah, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: When the Qur'an was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was brought the weapons, so they were returned to Rifa'ah. When the Qur'an was revealed concerning the polytheists, Allah the Almighty revealed: "And whoever opposes the Messenger after the guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers."

[5965] Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, from Qatadah, who said: A man betrayed his paternal uncle regarding a coat of mail and cast it upon a Jew who used to associate with them. The man's uncle and his people argued, and it was as if the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) excused him. Then he fled to the land of shirk (polytheism), so it was revealed concerning him: "And whoever opposes the Messenger after the guidance has become clear to him"—the verse. He is Tu'mah ibn Ubayriq.

His saying, the Almighty: "And follows other than the way of the believers."

[5966] 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd al-Malik ibn al-Rabi' ibn Abi Rashid narrated to us in Kufa, 'Amr ibn 'Atiyyah narrated to us, from 'Atiyyah, who said: Ibn 'Umar said: Mu'awiyah called me and said: Pledge allegiance to your nephew. I said: O Mu'awiyah, "And whoever opposes the Messenger after the guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers, We will give him what he has taken and burn him in Hell, and evil it is as a destination." So I silenced him.

[5967] Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, from Asbat ibn Nasr, from al-Suddi, who said: When Allah exposed Tu'mah in Medina, he broke into the house of al-Hajjaj, intending to steal from it. Al-Hajjaj heard a rustling and the rattling of skins he had with him. He looked, and it was Tu'mah. He said: My guest and my cousin, and you wanted to steal from me! He drove him out, and he died in the Harrah of Banu Sulaym as a disbeliever. So Allah the Almighty revealed concerning him: "And whoever opposes the Messenger after the guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers, We will give him what he has taken and burn him in Hell, and evil it is as a destination."

[5968] Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, concerning His saying: "We will give him what he has taken"—that is, from the idols of falsehood.
