its mother was among the general herd of camels. If it was a female, they would spare it and split the ears of its mother; they would not shear her fur, would not milk her, would not shear her fur, and would not load anything upon her back. She was among the cattle whose backs were forbidden.
[The Third Interpretation]
[6889] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, al-Layth narrated to me, ‘Uqayl narrated to me from Ibn Shihab, who said: Ibn al-Musayyib used to say: The Bahirah is the one whose milk is forbidden for the idols, and no one among the people milks her.
[The Fourth Interpretation]
[6890] Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah narrated to us from Abu Rawq, regarding his saying: 'Bahirah,' he said: When the she-camel has produced six generations, all of which are females, its ears are split, and no benefit is taken from it; whatever comes from it belongs to the idols.
His saying, the Exalted: "Nor a Sa'ibah."
[The First Interpretation]
[6891] My father narrated to us, Yahya ibn Salih al-Wuhati narrated to us, Jurayj narrated to us, Abu Ishaq narrated from Abu al-Ahwas from his father, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he recited: "Allah has not appointed a Bahirah, nor a Sa'ibah, nor a Wasilah," then he said: "As for the Sa'ibah, it is the one they leave free for their idols. They go to their idols and leave it free."
[6892] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding "nor a Sa'ibah," he said: As for the Sa'ibah, they used to leave some of their cattle free for their idols, not riding upon their backs, not milking them, not shearing their fur, and not carrying anything upon them. But they would leave a group of their cattle; they would not mention the name of Allah over any of them, neither regarding riding them, nor their offspring, nor carrying loads, nor slaughtering them.
It was narrated from Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib that he said: It is left free, and nothing is carried upon it.
