[The Second Interpretation]

[6893] Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa’ narrated from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid, regarding his saying: 'Nor a Sa'ibah.' The Sa'ibah among the sheep is like what he interpreted regarding the Bahirah, except that whatever offspring it gives birth to between it and six generations, it remains in its state. When it gives birth to the seventh, whether a male or two males, they slaughter it, and their men eat it to the exclusion of their women.

[The Third Interpretation]

[6894] Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn Bishr ibn 'Ubadah narrated to us from Abu Rawq, regarding his saying: 'Nor a Sa'ibah,' he said: A she-camel would belong to a man for his journey; when he would go out on an expedition and fulfill his need during that journey, he would set it free (sa'ibah). Whatever came from it, whether milk, fur, or other than that, belonged to the idols.

[6895] Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi reported to us in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: 'Nor a Sa'ibah.' As for the Sa'ibah, it is when a man sets free whatever he wishes of his wealth out of gratitude—if his wealth increased, or he recovered from an illness, or he rode a she-camel and it was safe—he would call it a Sa'ibah and let it loose. No one among the Arabs would compensate him, otherwise a punishment would befall him in this world.

[The Fourth Interpretation]

[6896] 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Abu al-Asbagh narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Salamah narrated to me, Ibn Ishaq said: The Sa'ibah is a she-camel that, when it gives birth to ten females with no male among them, is set free. It is not ridden, its fur is not sheared, and its milk is not drawn except for a guest.

His saying, the Exalted: "Nor a Wasilah."

[The First Interpretation]

[6897] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih al-Wuhati narrated to us, Jurayj narrated to us, Abu Ishaq narrated from Abu al-Ahwas from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) recited: "Allah has not appointed a Bahirah, nor a Sa'ibah, nor a Wasilah," then he said: "As for the Wasilah, it is the one that gives birth to six generations, and then gives birth to a seventh; they would cut its ear and dock its horn, saying: 'It has joined (wasalat) [its offspring].' So they would not slaughter it, it would not be beaten, and it would not be prevented from what it approached at a watering trough."

[6898] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: 'Nor a Wasilah,' he said: As for the Wasilah, it is the ewe that, when it has produced seven
