[The Second Aspect]
[6922] Kathir ibn Shihab al-Qazwini al-Madhhiji narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Sa'id ibn Sabiq narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us from al-Rabi' from Abu al-'Aliyah from 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud regarding His saying: 'O you who have believed, you are responsible for yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided.' He said: They were sitting with 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud, and among the sitters with 'Abd Allah was one who said: Shall I not arise and enjoin good upon them and forbid them from evil? A brother next to him said: Tend to yourself, for Allah says: 'O you who have believed, you are responsible for yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided.' He said: Ibn Mas'ud heard him and said: Hush, the interpretation of this verse has not yet come. The Qur'an was sent down when it was sent down; some of its verses had their interpretation pass during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); some of them will have their interpretation occur years after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); some of them will have their interpretation occur after today; and some of them will have their interpretation occur at the time of the Reckoning—what is mentioned of the Reckoning, Paradise, and Hell. As long as your hearts are one, your desires are one, you have not become divided into sects, and you have not tasted the violence of one another, then enjoin (the good) and forbid (the evil). But when the hearts and desires differ, you become divided into sects, and you taste the violence of one another, then every man for himself; that is when the interpretation of this verse comes.
[6923] My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Shurayh narrated to us, Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated to us, Ma'qil ibn 'Ubayd Allah narrated to us from Habib ibn Abi Habib, from Makhul, that a man asked him about the saying of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic: 'O you who have believed, you are responsible for yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided.' He said: The interpretation of this verse has not come yet. When the one who gives admonition fears (to speak) and the one being admonished denies (it), then upon you is yourself; it will not harm you at that time if you are guided.
[The Third Aspect]
[6924] My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn Khalid al-Dimashqi narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us from Yazid ibn Abi Habib from Ka'b regarding the saying of Allah: 'You are responsible for yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided.' He said: When the church of the Mosque of Damascus is demolished and they make it a mosque, and the wearing of the 'usub (a specific type of garment) appears, then that is the time of the interpretation of this verse.
