Qatadah regarding His saying: "O you who have believed, the testimony between you when death approaches one of you at the time of making the will." He said: This is a man who died in a remote land, leaving behind an inheritance, having made a will, and two men bore witness to his will.

His saying, the Exalted: "Two [people] of justice"

[6931] 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and Yahya ibn Khalaf narrated to us, both of them saying: 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yazid ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Qusayt, he said: Ibn Mas'ud was asked about this verse: "Two [people] of justice from among you." He said: This is a traveler who has wealth with him and his appointed time (of death) overtakes him. If he finds two men from the Muslims, he hands his inheritance to them and has two just men from the Muslims bear witness upon them.

[6932] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Two [people] of justice from among you." He said: If he dies while Muslims are with him, Allah commanded him to have two just men from the Muslims bear witness to his will.

His saying, the Exalted: "From among you"

[6933] And through the same chain from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Two [people] of justice from among you." He said: From among the Muslims. It was also narrated from 'Ubaydah, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, al-Hasan al-Basri, Mujahid, Yahya ibn Ya'mur, al-Suddi, Qatadah, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam the same thing.

His saying, the Exalted: "Or two others from outside of you"

[The First Aspect]

[6934] My father narrated to us, Sa'id ibn 'Awn narrated to us, 'Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated to us, Habib ibn Abi 'Amrah narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, who said: Ibn 'Abbas said regarding His saying: "Or two others from outside of you." He said: From outside the Muslims, from the People of the Book. It was also narrated from 'Ubaydah, Shurayh, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, Muhammad ibn Sirin, Yahya ibn Ya'mur, 'Ikrimah, Mujahid, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Sha'bi, Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, Qatadah, Abu Mijlaz, al-Suddi, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam the same thing.
