[The Third Interpretation]

[5986] Sa'd ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd al-Hakam narrated to us, Yahya ibn Hassan narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Yunus, from al-Hasan, regarding His saying: "And I will surely command them, so they will surely change the creation of Allah," he said: It is tattooing.

[5987] Musa ibn Harun al-Tusi informed us, in what he wrote to me, al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Marrudhi narrated to us, Shayban informed us, from Qatadah: "And I will surely command them, so they will surely change the creation of Allah," he said: What is the matter with these ignorant people who change the dye of Allah and the color of Allah?

His saying, the Almighty: "And whoever takes Satan as an ally instead of Allah has certainly sustained a clear loss."

[5988] My father narrated to us, Khalid ibn Judhash al-Muhallabi narrated to us, Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from al-Zubayr ibn Khirrit, from 'Ikrimah, he said: Satan was only named "Shaytan" because he acted in a satanic manner (tashaytana).

[5989] Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat ibn Nasr narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "[It is] not by your wishful thinking nor by the wishful thinking of the People of the Scripture," he said: A group of Muslims, Jews, and Christians met. The Jews said to the Muslims: We are better than you; our religion is before yours, our Book is before yours, and our Prophet is before your Prophet, and we are upon the religion of Abraham, and none shall enter Paradise except those who were Jews. The Christians said the same. The Muslims replied: Our Book is after your Book, our Prophet is after your Prophet, and our religion is after your religion, and you have been commanded to follow us and abandon your affair; therefore, we are better than you, we are upon the religion of Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac, and none shall enter Paradise except those who were upon our religion. So, Allah refuted their claims and said: "[It is] not by your wishful thinking nor by the wishful thinking of the People of the Scripture."

[5990] Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Ibn 'Ulayyah narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding: "[It is] not by your wishful thinking nor by the wishful thinking of the People of the Scripture," he said: The Arabs said: We shall not be punished and we shall not be resurrected. The Jews and the Christians said: None shall enter Paradise except those who were Jews or Christians. They [also] said: The Fire will not touch us except for a limited number of days."
