His saying, the Exalted: "[To] send down to us a table from the heaven."
[7016] Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la informed us by way of reading, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, and al-Layth ibn Sa'd informed me, from 'Uqayl, he said: Ibn Shihab [said that] Ibn 'Abbas used to narrate that 'Isa ibn Maryam said to the Children of Israel: "O Children of Israel, are you willing to fast for Allah for thirty days, then ask Him, and He will grant you what you have asked for? For the wage of the worker is upon the one for whom he worked." So they did so, then they said: "O teacher of good, you told us that the wage of the worker is upon the one for whom he worked, and you commanded us to fast for Allah thirty days, and we did so. We would not have worked for anyone for thirty days unless you provided us food on the day we finished. Can your Lord send down to us a table from the heaven?" He said: "Fear Allah, if you are believers."
His saying, the Exalted: "They said, 'We want to eat from it and for our hearts to be reassured.'"
[7017] Ja'far ibn 'Ali, known as Abu [Adhak] al-Hawari, informed us in what he wrote to me, Isma'il ibn Abi Uways narrated to us, Abu 'Abd Allah 'Abd al-Quddus ibn Ibrahim ibn 'Ubayd Allah ibn Mirdas al-'Abdari, the client of Banu 'Abd al-Dar al-San'ani, narrated to me, from Ibrahim ibn 'Umar, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, from Abu 'Uthman al-Nahdi, from Salman al-Khayr, that he said: "When the disciples asked 'Isa ibn Maryam for the table from the heaven, it was a sign from your Lord that was sent down upon you. The Thamud were only destroyed when they asked their prophet for a sign and were tested by it until their destruction was therein. They refused [to be satisfied] unless he brought it to them. Therefore, they said, 'We want to eat from it and for our hearts to be reassured, and [that] we may know that you have been truthful to us, and we may be among the witnesses to it.'"
[7018] Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Qays ibn Muslim, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding His saying: "to be reassured (tatma'inna)," he said: "to be certain."
His saying, the Exalted: "'Isa ibn Maryam said, 'O Allah, our Lord!'"
