[5995] Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, Ibn Wahb informed me, 'Amr ibn al-Harith informed me, from Bakr ibn Sawadah, from Yazid ibn Abi Yazid, from 'Ubayd ibn 'Umayr, from 'A'ishah, that a man recited this verse: "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it," and said: "If we are to be recompensed for everything we do, then we are ruined." This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said: "Yes, the believer is recompensed for it in this world through his calamities in his body and in what harms him."
[5996] My father narrated to us, Salamah ibn Shabeeb narrated to us, Hushaym narrated to us, from Abu 'Amir, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from 'A'ishah, she said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I know the harshest verse in the Quran. He said: What is it, O 'A'ishah? I said: "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it." He said: It is what befalls the believing servant, even the minor affliction that he suffers.
[The Second Interpretation]
[5997] My father narrated to us, Abu Salamah and 'Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Hafs al-Qurashi narrated to us, he said: Hammad narrated to us, from Humayd, from al-Hasan, regarding His saying: "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it," he said: It refers to the disbeliever. Then he recited: "And are We to recompense [anybody] but the ungrateful?"
His saying, the Almighty: "And he will not find for himself besides Allah any protector or helper."
[5998] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And he will not find for himself besides Allah any protector or helper," unless he repents before his death, then Allah will accept his repentance.
His saying, the Almighty: "And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer."
[5999] My father narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Musa narrated to us, Hisham—meaning Ibn Yusuf—informed us, from Ibn Jurayj, he said: It reached me from 'Ikrimah, the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas, from Ibn 'Abbas, that Ibn 'Umar met him while he was sad and asked him about this verse: "And whoever does righteous deeds..." He said: It refers to the obligatory duties (fara'id).
[6000] Ahmad ibn Sinan al-Wasiti narrated to us, Yahya ibn Hammad narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Sulayman—meaning al-A'mash—from Muslim—meaning Abu Sakhr—from Masruq, he said: When this verse was revealed: "[It is] not by your wishful thinking nor by the wishful thinking of the People of the Scripture. Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it," the Jews said:
