and he said: "Allah sent down the table from the sky, and they were commanded not to betray and not to keep any for tomorrow, but they betrayed, stored, and kept some, so they were transformed into monkeys and swine."
7046 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid narrated to us, Yazid ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah, from 'Ammar ibn Yasir, regarding His saying: "Indeed, I am going to send it down to you, so whoever disbelieves after that among you, then indeed I will punish him with a punishment with which I will not punish anyone among the worlds." It was mentioned to us that they were transformed into swine.
He said: Al-Hasan used to say: "When it was said to them 'so whoever disbelieves... then indeed I will punish him with a punishment,' they said: 'We have no need for it,' so it did not descend."
The saying of the Exalted: "Anyone among the worlds."
7047 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim informed us in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "Then indeed I will punish him with a punishment with which I will not punish anyone among the worlds," he says:
I will punish him with a punishment with which no one among the worlds will be punished other than the people of the table.
The saying of the Exalted: "And when Allah said: O 'Isa, son of Maryam, did you say to the people..."
7048 - My father narrated to us, Yahya ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, Jarir ibn 'Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from Maysarah, who said: When Allah the Exalted said: "O 'Isa, son of Maryam, did you say to the people: Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?" He said: His joints trembled, and he feared that he might have said it. He said: "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say what I have no right to."
7049 - Ahmad ibn Mansur al-Ramadi narrated to us, he said: I heard Yahya ibn Ma'in saying: I heard Yahya ibn Adam saying: I heard Hasan ibn Salih saying: When He said: "Did you say to the people: Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?" He said: Every joint of his slipped from its place out of fear, so he said: "Exalted are You... If I had said it, You would have known it."
(1). Al-Tirmidhi, Book of Tafsir, no. 5306, 1/242, and he said: This is more authentic than the hadith of al-Hasan ibn 'Arafah. (2). The verifier of Tafsir Ibn Kathir said: This statement requires evidence, and there is no indication in the apparent meaning of the Qur'an other than that the disciples asked for the descent of a table from the sky, and that Allah answered them in that, and threatened them with severe punishment if they disbelieved after the fulfillment of this desire. As for the description of the table, what was upon it, the manner of its descent, the number of those who ate from it, and how many times it descended, the Qur'an did not address it with explicit or implicit mention. It is better to limit oneself to what is stated in the Noble Book and what is established in the authentic Sunnah—see Tafsir Ibn Kathir 3/226.
