Volume 4 · Page 201His saying (the Exalted): 'Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right'

Translation · EN

7050 - al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' informed us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "O 'Isa, son of Maryam, did you say to the people: Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?" When will it be? He said: "On the Day of Resurrection. Do you not see that He says: 'This is the Day when their truthfulness will benefit the truthful'?"

7051 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "And when Allah said: O 'Isa, son of Maryam, did you say to the people: Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?" He said: When Allah the Exalted raised 'Isa ibn Maryam to Himself, the Christians said what they said and claimed that 'Isa commanded them to do that.

The saying of the Exalted: "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say what I have no right to."

7052 - My father narrated to us, Ibn 'Umar narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from 'Amr, from Tawus, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: 'Isa was taught his argument and his encounter with Allah in His saying: "And when Allah said: O 'Isa, son of Maryam, did you say to the people: Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?" Abu Hurayrah said on the authority of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): So Allah taught him: "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say what I have no right to. If I had said it, You would have known it," the entire verse.

7053 - 'Amr ibn Thawr informed us in what he wrote to me, al-Firyabi narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from Ibn Tawus, who said: 'Isa argued with his Lord in this verse, and Allah granted him success.

The saying of the Exalted: "If I had said it, You would have known it."

7054 - My father narrated to us, Abu Ghassan Malik ibn Isma'il narrated to us, Qays narrated to us, from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from Maysarah, regarding His saying: "O 'Isa, son of Maryam, did you say to the people: Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?" He said: Every joint in him trembled until he fell out of fear that he might have said it. He did not say: "I did not say it," rather he said: "If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is the Knower of the unseen."
