7414 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "or that He makes you taste the confusion of sects," he said: He will cause you to be divided.

His saying, the Almighty: "and makes some of you taste the violence of others."

7415 - Abu Sa'id ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Muhammad al-'Anqazi narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, from Abu al-Minhal, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) who said: "I asked my Lord for four things for my Ummah; He granted me three and withheld one from me. I asked Him that my Ummah would not perish by a single trial, and He granted it to me. I asked Him that He would not cause an enemy from outside them to overcome them, and He granted it to me. I asked Him that He would not torment them with what the nations before you were tormented with, and He granted it to me. And I asked Him that He would not cause their violence to be among themselves, but He withheld it from me."

7416 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "and makes some of you taste the violence of others," [meaning]: Some of you will be unleashed upon others with torment and killing.

7417 - Muhammad ibn 'Ubadah al-Wasiti narrated to us, Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, Hammad informed us, from Abu Harun al-Ma'badi, from Nawf that he recited this verse: "Say: 'He has the power to send punishment upon you from above you or from beneath your feet or that He makes you taste the confusion of sects and makes some of you taste the violence of others,'" he said: It is, by Allah, men who hold spears in their hands, with which they pierce one another.

His saying: "See how We explain the signs that perhaps they may understand."

7418 - Ahmad ibn 'Isam narrated to us, al-Mu'ammal ibn Isma'il al-Basri Abu 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, Ya'qub ibn Isma'il ibn Yasar al-'Adani narrated to us, he said: I heard Zayd ibn Aslam saying: When [the verse] "Say: 'He has the power to send punishment upon you from above you...'" was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Do not return after me as disbelievers, striking the necks of one another with swords." They said: "But we testify that there is no god but Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes." Some people then said: "This will never happen, that we kill one another while we are Muslims." So it was revealed: "See how We explain the signs that perhaps they may understand. But your people have denied it, though it is the truth. Say: 'I am not a manager over you.' For every prophecy there is a settlement, and you will come to know."
