Sa'id, from Qatada, regarding His saying: "So when he saw the sun rising, he said, 'This is my Lord; this is greater.'" It was mentioned to us that the Prophet of Allah, Ibrahim (peace be upon him), when Allah showed him the dominion of the heavens, saw the sun rising and said: "This is my Lord; this is greater," meaning that in its creation, it is greater than the two previous creations, and more luminous.
His saying: "So when it set, he said, 'O my people, indeed I am free from what you associate with Allah.'"
7523 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, meaning His saying: "So when it set," meaning when it disappeared, "he said, 'O my people, indeed I am free from what you associate with Allah.'" Allah said to him: "Submit." He replied: "I have submitted to the Lord of the worlds."
His saying: "Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth."
7524 - My father narrated to us, Surayj ibn Yunus narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Yazid narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "Created the heavens," he said: He brought the heavens into existence.
His saying: "Inclining toward truth, and I am not of the polytheists."

7525 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiya ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talha, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding "inclining toward truth (Hanifan)," he says: Performing Hajj.
It was narrated from al-Hasan, al-Dahhak, 'Atiyya, and al-Suddi similarly.
The Second Aspect:
7526 - My father narrated to us, Qabisa and 'Isa ibn Ja'far narrated to us, they said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding "inclining toward truth (Hanifan)," he said: Following [the truth]. It was narrated from al-Rabi' ibn Anas similarly.
The Third Aspect:
7527 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd al-Hakam narrated to us, 'Uthman ibn Salih narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, from Abu Sakhr, from Muhammad ibn Ka'b, he said: "Inclining toward truth (Hanifan)," he said: The Hanif is the upright one. Abu Sakhr said, from 'Isa ibn Jariya: I heard him say the same.
The Fourth Aspect:
7528 - Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazyad al-Bayruti informed us, by way of reading, Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb informed me, 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' informed me, from his father regarding His saying: "Inclining toward truth (Hanifan)," it is said: Sincere (mukhlisan).
سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ: قَوْلَهُ: فَلَمَّا رَأَى الشَّمْسَ بَازِغَةً قَالَ هَذَا رَبِّي هَذَا أَكْبَرُ، ذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، لَمَّا أَرَاهُ اللَّهُ مَلَكُوتَ السَّمَوَاتِ رَأَى الشَّمْسَ بَازِغَةً قَالَ هَذَا رَبِّي هَذَا أَكْبَرُ أَيْ خَلْقًا هُوَ أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْخَلِيقَتَيْنِ الأُولَيَيْنِ وَأَنْوَرُ.
قَوْلُهُ: فَلَمَّا أَفَلَتْ قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ
٧٥٢٣ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ حَمَّادٍ، ثنا أَسْبَاطٌ، عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ يَعْنِي قَوْلَهُ: فَلَمَّا أَفَلَتْ فَلَمَّا غَابَتْ قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ، قَالَ اللَّهُ لَهُ: أَسْلِمْ. قَالَ: أَسْلَمْتُ لِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ.
قَوْلُهُ: إِنِّي وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السماوات وَالأَرْضَ
٧٥٢٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ جُوَيْبِرٍ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ في قوله: فطر السماوات، قَالَ: خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ.
قَوْلُهُ: حَنِيفًا وَمَا أَنَا من المشركين.

٧٥٢٥ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، حَنِيفًا، يَقُولُ: حَاجًّا.
وَرُوِيَ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ وَالضَّحَّاكِ وَعَطِيَّةَ وَالسُّدِّيِّ، نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.

٧٥٢٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي صَخْرٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، قَالَ: حَنِيفًا، قَالَ: الْحَنِيفُ الْمُسْتَقِيمُ. قَالَ أَبُو صَخْرٍ، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ جَارِيَةَ: سَمِعَهُ يَقُولُ: مِثْلَهُ.
